If it's the sea you're after, the cable car from the town center takes you in minutes to Isola Bella and Mazzarò Beach, an islet and nature reserve set in crystal-clear waters. About 15 minutes by bus or car, Giardini Naxos awaits with its sandy beach and nightlife, on the coast that was once the first Greek colony in Sicily.

For those wanting to explore inland, the Alcantara Gorges are a 25-30 minute drive away — basalt lava walls carved by the river, among the island's most spectacular natural sites — while Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, is about an hour away, promising an excursion with views unlike anywhere else.
